Did you know that you could have habits that waste energy every day without even realizing it?

That’s right, if you are like most people in your energy use, then you are probably wasting a lot more energy than you could be. Many of these habits waste a small amount of energy, but it adds up quickly. If you haven’t already, check out our last blog to learn about the energy-wasting habits we’ve already gone over, and keep reading to learn about a few more:

Habit #5. You don’t unplug your “vampire” electronics.

Did you know that some electronics will still draw energy even when they are turned off or not in use? These electronics are called “vampire” electronics, and if you leave them plugged in all the time, you can expect to pay an additional $38 on your electricity bill every year. Vampire electronics, such as surround sound systems, computers, cable boxes, televisions and DVD players, go into standby mode when they are not in use, which means that you need to actually unplug them to get them to stop drawing power.

Habit #6. You leave your cell phone plugged, even when it’s fully charged.

It’s always good to have a fully charged cell phone, but the most it can ever be charged is 100 percent. Once it is fully charged, keeping it plugged in will only waste energy. That’s why, instead of charging your phone at night when you go to sleep, charge it while you are reading, cooking or watching television. This way, you are awake to unplug the charger when your phone is fully charged. The same goes for any other chargeable electronics in your home.

Habit #7. You don’t program your thermostat.

Do you leave your thermostat set on the same temperature all the time? If so, you are wasting a lot of energy. There is absolutely no point in heating or cooling an empty house, and that is just what you are doing if you don’t program your thermostat when you leave. The great news is that, with an automatic thermostat, you can program your thermostat for the whole day at one time, which will allow you to set it and forget it. If you don’t have an automatic thermostat, upgrading could make a huge difference.
